Conversation summary

COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in movement restrictions in many places, changing the way we live and work such as making that abrupt shift to working from home. The future is uncertain with no clear indication when things will return to normal. How will we work and thrive in the post-pandemic future?

In this conversation with Nanang Chalid and Praise Mok, we discuss about how the workplace has changed with the pandemic in order for organisations and the employees to thrive in a sustainable future. As people leaders, Nanang and Praise shared some advice on how leaders can prepare and achieve success for the coming year ahead.

Key learnings and best practices

How do organisations create an adaptable work culture?

  • Have a strong center of gravity to navigate through the storm. In the case of a pandemic, focus on creating a great employee experience. Employees are more agile when they are assured that they are in good hands of the organisation.

  • During times of crisis, identify a person in-charge of the Business Continuity Plan (BCP) and form a team consisting of people across different departments. This will be the team who will take charge of disseminating information and latest updates.

  • Ensure always-on communication with employees. Create a chatgroup on preferred platforms/channels to provide daily updates to employees so that everyone is clear of what is happening and is kept up to date.

What are the skills that leaders need to perform in the new normal?

  • Demonstrate transparency and clarity during communication.

  • Increase the cadence of check-ins with employees as compared to pre-COVID period such as increasing the weekly check-ins to three times a week.

  • Practice social listening such as running bi-weekly surveys to find out how employees are doing. Knowing the Employee Net Promoter Score (eNPS) from these surveys can help to improve the employee experience with further actions.

Getting ready for the coming quarters ahead

  • As leaders and managers, know when to show courage, care and trust at the right time to your employees. Support key milestones in employee's journey with the organisation instead of being barriers.

  • Stay strong on purpose. Communicate the why a lot. Employees want to stay invested in what they're doing.

  • Make learning simple and relevant to aid in adoption and engagement. Learning can be broken down into bitesize.
